Demolition of the Soka in Ibadan, or the "forest of horror", where suspected ritualists had killed hundreds of people,was stopped midway by the police yesterday.
According to the Police Commissioner Mohammed Idabawa, the forensic police team from Abuja need more time to comb the forest for evidence that would enable it determine those involved in murders.
If the demolition had been allowed, useful evidence could have been destroyed, the officials added.
Oluyole Local Government Chairman, Ayodele Abass-Aleshinloye, explained that the land was owned by the 11 local government areas in Ibadan but was leased to Costain Nigeria Limited during the channelisation of the Ogunpa River.
Thus, as it had been abandoned for 10 years, criminals received room for making horrible things.
The demolition process is to resume on Friday, while the investigation by the forensic experts is to be completed today.
However, people are scared that some victims might be still trapped in the hidden dungeon of kidnappers.
Soon after the shocking discovery of the den last Saturday, the angry youths set ablaze a man, who was caught with 42 SIM cards of various networks on him. The suspect died.
Later on, another attempt of jungle justice was made, when one more suspect was attacked at Queens Cinema area, however the police managed to rescue the man. During the arrest 3 identity cards and 42 SIM cards of various networks were also found in his possession.
