Rest is Messi’s worst enemy

For some footballers, the best way to rest is by training or playing the game. That is exactly how it is for Leo Messi - long holidays take their toll on him. Given his muscular constitution, the Argentine is a player who needs continuous training to avoid injury and prolonged rest usually
ends up costing him dearly.
That is one of the main reasons he fell injured last season, and again during this current campaign, having previously not missed a single game through injury for four years.
It is true that with Guardiola's arrival, Messi stepped up his invisible training. In other words, he began a daily regime in which he was strict with his rest and diet. His nutrition changed considerably and that helped him. The hamstring problems he had previously experienced in both legs became a thing of the past.
However, it is also true that during those four seasons he barely rested whilst on holiday. What seemed like a blessing became a problem last year. Messi enjoyed 36 consecutive days of rest and it was thought that this would benefit his future performances. His body reacted badly and on 2nd April, against PSG, he picked up an injury to his right hamstring. Since then he has not fully recovered.
