The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday announced that Ebola virus killed 84 people in three days, bringing the current global death toll to 1,229. According to Vanguard, the apex health body said the death toll which passed 1,000 at the weekend further increased from last Thursday to Saturday. The UN health agency said the number of confirmed infections also soared by 113 over the three days to 2,240 cases. Ebola virus which hit four West African countries after it broke out in Guinea at the beginning of the year is considered the deadliest since the discovery of the epidemic four decades ago in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The recent figures shows that Liberia was worse hit with 48 new cases and 53 deaths, lifting its total count of cases to 834, with 466 deaths. The new WHO toll, however, predates Saturday’s attack on a quarantine centre in the Liberian capital Monrovia, where 17 Ebola patients escaped and are still at large. The new data further revealed that Sierra Leone has 38 new infections and 17 deaths, bringing the total cases to 848 with a death toll of 365. Guinea counted 24 new cases and 14 new deaths. That lifted the total number of cases to 543, with 394 deaths, while Nigeria, recorded three new cases but no casualties yet. |
