APC convention: Tinubu, Modu Sheriff renew rivalry

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) national convention fixed for next week, party gladiators have intensified battle for the control of the national executive of the main opposition party.
Sunday Sun checks revealed that former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff have returned to the trenches over who gets what within the party.
Tinubu, according to party sources, is backing the candidature of former Edo State governor, Odigie Oyegun for the national chairman of the party which has been zoned to the South-south geo-political zone.
Modu Sheriff has also thrown his political weight behind former External Affairs Minister, Tom Ikimi for the exalted position.
Interestingly, Oyegun was a member of the defunct ANPP where Modu Sheriff once held sway as chairman BoT, while Ikimi, a member of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria was chairman of the merger steering committee of the opposition parties which coalesced into APC.
Sunday Sun source revealed that the former Borno State governor was not happy that he lost out in the battle for the control of the Borno state chapter of the party to his estranged god son and governor of the State, Kashim Shettima.
The former strident opposition to the emergence of Borno governor's choice as chairman of the party in the state was allegedly spurned by the interim national executive of the party led by Bisi Akande.
Another power bloc within the main opposition party is the governors. But Sunday Sun investigation revealed that they are divided over the aspirations of former Bayelsa State governor, Timipre Sylva and the anointed candidate of Rotimi Amaechi, Dr Sam Jaja.
"Sylva's aspiration is being pushed by Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha; the former Bayelsa governor may not make it because of a perceived credibility crisis: he has a pending case of alleged financial sleaze, with EFCC and apparently that may affect his chances.
"The South-west governors may ultimately queue behind Odigie Oyegun, because of Bola Tinubu overbearing influence in the zone" Sunday Sun source further argued
