Rival fans and players were quick to stick the boot in after Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Jose Mourinho's ultra-negative tactic of 'parking the bus' and counter attacking, which had proved so effective in the recent away matches at Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, slowly unravelled as the Spanish side ran out 3-1 winners to book a final showdown against city rivals Real.
Images quickly appeared of a battered bus outside Stamford Bridge and Liverpool defender Jose Enrique, obviously still smarting from the 2-0 defeat on Sunday which dented his side's title hopes, tweeted: 'This is what happens when you don't play football......'
Atletico players had tried to console a tearful John Terry after the final whistle but the reaction on social media was not quite as forgiving.
Terry's decision to lift the Champions League trophy in his kit and shinpads in 2012 despite being suspended for the game has been a constant source of amusement.
He repeated the performance after the 2013 Europa League triumph, so with the prospect of missing out on the Champions League final, the photoshop images of him gatecrashing Atletico's celebrations were perhaps inevitable.
