Super Eagles' goalkeeper, Austin Ejide, came in the centre of attention afterNigeria VS Scotlandpre-World Cup warm up match, on May 29, 2014, Wednesday.
The player, who may have definitely performed better, scored a crazy own goal, amidst match-fixing allegationsby the U.K. and international authorities. Despite the goal has been cancelled by English Premier League referee, Lee Probert, who saw a foul committed by Scottish footballer Grant Hanley.
It all began from a harmless looking corner. The keeper came to catch a ball into the box. It looked like he had grabbed it easily and firmly, but then appeared to throw the ball into his own net. Scottish players displayed amuzement for a second and then started goal celebrations.
The strike was eventually annulled for a slight foul on the Super Eagles' goalie.
The first period of the game at Fulham's Craven Cottage, London, ended in a 1-1. In the second period Super Eagles' Azubuike Egquekwe scored the second own goal of the night. It had not been cancelled this time.Uche Nwofor's equaliseron the 90th minute saved the team from defeat.
However, this weird goal by Ejide left many doubts as it took place on the next day after the Scottish FA were warned that the match with Nigeria could be targeted by match fixers. The football authority acted by a tip-off from the National Crime Agency. It is understood that a South American football official is being investigated as part of the inquiry.
The Big Boss Stephen Keshi defended the players, described all the allegations as ridiculous and noted that the boys were the football players and not the gamblers.
