Lionel Messi Leaving Barcelona? Messi To Be Sold?

That headline might have sounded alarming to some, while its what some would want while there are others who would just love to see how it plays out. As reported by Manuel Fernandez of Bleacherreport " Barcelona officials are entertaining the idea of selling Lionel Messi after contract talks recently stalled with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, according to reports.

Messi's sudden loss of form is also said to be behind such considerations, as revealed by Catalan channel Esport3 (via Pete Jenson of the Daily Mail):

" The suggestion is that certain members of the club's board believe the player is now worth more to them in the transfer market than on the pitch, that Messi is aware of this, and that he believes it is behind Barcelona's reluctance to improve his current contract which runs out in 2018. " Jenson noted that Messi's £205 million buyout clause is something Paris Saint-Germain would be willing to pay.

This is perhaps a tempting sum for Barca, who are about to go ahead with a stadium rebuild in the region of £493 million. Marca noted that Messi's contract is "due to be reviewed" after Neymar and his family received mega fees when the Brazilian starlet arrived from Santos.

Of course, Cristiano Ronaldo recently inked a £14.25 million-per-year deal at Real Madrid, as reported by BBC Sport—suggesting Messi needs a comparable contract. It is understood Barcelona wish to gain "half" of Messi's images rights in exchange for an annual salary of around £20.25 million, per Jenson's report. These numbers may prove to be a stumbling block for either party, as both sides look to maximise the potential of football's most decorated player."

If this had been mentioned two years ago one would have been thought it to be ridiculous as he was far and far the best player in the world, but after being hit by several injuries over the past year, it seems like the man is slowing down. And as we have all witnessed of late the Messi we are watching right now is simply not the Messi that won the Balon d'or four years in row.

Even though we couldn't be sure of the reason for this loss of form, it has been crystal clear that we are not seeing the same player who frustratingly put Cristiano Ronaldo in his shadows for several years and made an escort out of him at award nights.

This makes it not ridiculous for the possiblity of him being sold to be given a thought, or even more than a tought.

Let's look at the possibility of this transfer happening.
First of all; the basic transfer fee fee that would be required to buy him out of his current Barcelona contract is said to be around £250m. This kind of transfer fee can only be paid by Manchester City and PSG (and real Madrid*they already have Ronaldo, so its unlikely they d be interested).

If a bid of such magnituide is made Barcelona as they look to be willing, would inform the player of such bid and ask if he is interested in making it happen. With the alllure of a massive contract bigger than what he is asking for from Barcelona and a new challenge, he d probably say Yes.

If he says Yes and a transfer is agreed it would be of benefit to both parties (Fc Barcelona and Messi) he gets a bigger salary and a new adventure/chalellenge to look forward to. Meanwhile Barca get a massive windfall that would go a long way in easing their debt issues and aid their effort at renewing their stadium, while also allowing them to build the team around their new expensive signing, Neymar, who doesn't look at his best while playing second fiddle to Messi.
The only likely party to loose out in this transfer are the fans of FCB and the buying club if the transfer doesn't give the expected results.

A transfer of this magnituide will surely give a seismic effect to the world of football. While this might still sound impossible to some people, it might actually be a sensible move for FCB as it showed with the case of Ronaldinho who was being chased by all the top clubs in the world when he was at his prime; these clubs were ready to pay £100million (which at the time would have been a world record fee) for the player, but Barca ended up selling him to Ac Milan (who were one of those interested clubs) for just £17million.

Or it could tuen out like Cristiano Ronaldo s case who Man Utd sold for £80million I will like to assume we all know how that transfer has turned out for Man Utd and Real Madrid. So the eventual cases will either be a Ronaldo 2.0 or a Ronaldinho 2.0.

While this transfer might only end up happening on this page. One thing that is sure is; it would be interesting to watch how it all pans out!
