DPO Adekunle Awe of the Onikan Police Station, who was last week accused of raping a female detainee in his custody, Idowu Akinwunmi, a Benin Republic national, is reaching out to journalists to suppress further reporting on the case.
The revelation was made, on Monday by the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), who alleged it received credible information to that effect.
It would be recalled that the group last week sent a petition to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission over the rape allegations.
According to NOPRIN, Awe approached the journalists after he was granted bail.
The group further revealed that it had information that Awe is planing on using his contacts within the Nigeria Immigration Service to raid the area where Idowu and her fellow Beninois live in Lagos, as part of efforts to deport them.
"This is part of the desperate efforts by the DPO and those helping him to cover up and destroy evidence," NOPRIN said.
Meanwhile Mohammed Abubakar, the Inspector General of Police, yesterday constituted a panel to investigate the allegations against the DPO.
The panel include; three senior police officers from the Lagos State Command's X- Squad, the Human Rights Section, as well as the Office of the Public Relations Officer.
