BREAKING: Brandao sentenced to a month in jail for Thiago Motta headbutt

Bastiastriker Brandaohas been sentenced to a month in prison for headbutting Paris Saint- Germainmidfielder Thiago Motta- but the Brazilian might not serve any jail time.
The 34-year-old forward was on Thursday found guilty of assaulting the Italy international after their respective clubs' Ligue 1 meeting in the French capital on August 16.
The president of the correctional tribunal of Paris decreed that Brandao should serve a month in prison and pay a fine of €20,000, but added that an agreement could be reached that would see the player avoid incarceration.
The incident occurred after the conclusion of PSG's 2-0 win over Bastia but was captured on television cameras, with Brandao shown to have waited for Thiago Motta to enter the tunnel before confronting and then headbutting the midfielder.
The prosecution had called for the former Olympique de Marseille ace to be jailed for eight months and fined €15,000 because of the allegedly premeditated nature of the assault, claiming Brandao's reaction to his earlier on-field dispute with Thiago Motta had been "totally disproportionate and not instantaneous ... It was an act that was thought out, calculated ... and simply appalling."
Motta, meanwhile, had stated during his police statement: "During our clash on the field, he told me that he would wait for me. I had no idea that he really would."
However, Brandao's defence attorney had argued that the headbutt was "a sudden impulse" and an angry response to taunts from Thiago Motta relating to a rape allegation made against the South American in 2012, which was ultimately dropped.
Despite the fact that he may avoid imprisonment for the assault on Motta, Brandao, who was not present in court as he was undergoing surgery on a thigh problem, must still serve the six-month suspension handed out to him by Ligue 1's disciplinary commission in September, which means he will not be eligible to play again until February of next year.
