Van Persie fails to make shortlist for potential new Man Utd Captain! Checkout who made the Five man shortlist

Robin van Persie's future at Manchester United has been cast in some doubt in recent weeks – and it now appears he is not under consideration to replace Nemanja Vidic as captain.

The Dutch striker – who is the current skipper of his national side - had been among the frontrunners with bookmakers to take the armband from next season after Vidic confirmed his summer departure.

But United's official website has drawn up a shortlist of five potential future captains – and Van Persie is the notable absentee.

They assess the leadership credentials of Wayne Rooney – suggesting he is set to sign a new contract – David De Gea, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Darren Fletcher.

Van Persie would have made an obvious choice to lead the side. In his final year at Arsenal he was made club captain, while he wore the United armband during the summer tour of the Far East.

However, there have been reports of the 30-year-old being unsettled at Old Trafford under David Moyes.
He was sidelined for six weeks with a thigh injury over December and into the New Year and has struggled to replicate the form of last season.

Rooney remains the odds-on favourite to inherit the captaincy from next season with the England forward set to sign a new £300,000-per-week deal.

Patrice Evra, meanwhile, is also missing from the list and he, like Vidic, is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
