Pharrell was given the Innovator award, after Gwen Stefani led a tribute to him and recalled how they met when working on the 2002 No Doubt track Hella Good.
'Even though he's one of the biggest stars out there he never loses his sense of wonder and amazement,' she said. 'We all took a chance and crossed boundaries and made magic together ...Basically anything he touches turns to gold.'
Several other stars then spoke about how brilliant he is, including Usher, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga, and Oprah Winfrey who told him: 'Your future, baby, is so bright, it burns my eyes.'
After he performed a medley of songs including Happy, Get Lucky and Blurred Lines, and spent much of it dancing with Rihanna, Pharrell humbly picked up his award from Gwen.
'Oh my god, it's such an honour to get this award from you, Gwen,' he said. 'The coolest of all cool girls in the world.'
He thanked his wife and son and then added: 'Thanks to all the folks at radio that took a chance on songs like Happy, Get Lucky, Blurred Lines, Hollaback, Hella Good.
'I never dreamt in a million, million, million years as a producer that I'd be standing here as an artist. And all I did was write the songs and you guys did all the hard work and heavy lifting, all those Youtube views and calls in. Thank you so much for lifting me so high and my music so high.'
